My neighbor Kit Boise-Cossart has been a builder of custom homes in the Gaviota area since 1974, and he's been "green" all along, taking care to minimize the environmental impact of construction every step of the way, from readying the site, to selection of materials, methods of construction, and clean-up afterward.

He's also big on small - smaller houses, says Kit, simply make sense - they use fewer resources, occupy less space, and let's face it, they're beautiful. But lately Kit has been building houses so small as to be miniature…tiny works of art that he felt inexplicably compelled to create. Take a look for yourself:

The drawing Starry Night was Kit's first vision. There followed Five Houses in Douglas fir riddled with .22 caliber bullets, and then Black House, the one with the white nails. Kit and I discussed Black House - it's a starry night for sure, but does it show light seeking entry, or some kind of an assault?

Personally, I like Blue House -- to me it speaks of resilience and resourcefulness, no attempt to conceal how it's taped together.

And I like that White House too; not much roof to get in the sky's way. "White has a metaphorical relation with clarity, or purity, or righteousness," says Kit. "But it's pretty hard to analyze when you're making it."
